How to Structure an Academic Paper: From Research Question to IMRaD, Evidence Chain, and Responsible AI Writing
Learn how to structure a biomedical research paper around a clear question, IMRaD logic, evidence flow, and responsible AI use.
Before using this in research
The goal is not to adopt another tool. The goal is to reduce verified research time without weakening the evidence trail.
Best for
Biomedical, medical, public health, and academic researchers who need to write or revise research papers, thesis chapters, case-based manuscripts, reviews, or grant-related academic text. This method is especially useful when the content is rich but the manuscript reads like a collection of materials rather than a research argument.
First step
Start by writing one precise research question and identifying the intended reader’s key judgment: what they need to understand, verify, and accept after reading the paper.
A safer workflow
1
Define the research question, study objective, target journal or academic context, and the reader’s expected decision point before drafting the structure.
2Map the evidence chain: connect the research question to study design, data sources, methods, key findings, limitations, and the conclusion that the evidence can reasonably support.
3Build the manuscript around IMRaD or the required format: Introduction explains why the question matters, Methods shows how evidence was produced, Results presents findings without overinterpretation, and Discussion explains meaning, limitations, and implications.
4Revise each paragraph by function: topic sentence, evidence, interpretation, and transition. Use AI only to support outlining, clarity, language polishing, or consistency checks while keeping authorship, interpretation, and scientific claims under researcher control.
Watch-outs
Do not let the paper become a chronological record of everything done; structure it around the research question and the evidence needed to answer it.
Avoid overstating findings, especially in the Discussion and conclusion. Claims should match the study design, sample, statistical strength, and limitations.
Do not use AI to invent citations, results, methods, patient information, or unsupported interpretations. All scientific content must be checked against source data and references.
Evidence checks
Can each major claim be traced to a specific result, method, dataset, reference, or accepted background fact?
Does the IMRaD structure create a continuous logic from question to method, result, interpretation, and limitation?
Would a reviewer or reader understand why the study was done, how the evidence was generated, what was found, and what can and cannot be concluded?
