Biomedical, medical, and academic researchers who need an efficient, reliable workflow for reviewing journal articles, clinical studies, systematic review sources, or evidence summaries.
First step
Start with your reference manager, usually Zotero, as the central library. Store PDFs, citation metadata, tags, notes, and collections there before adding reading, translation, or AI-assisted summary tools around it.
A safer workflow
1Use Zotero to collect papers from databases, publisher pages, and preprint servers, then organize them by project, topic, study type, or review question.
2Read and annotate PDFs in Zotero or a dedicated PDF reader. Keep key methods, population, intervention, outcomes, and limitations visible in structured notes.
3Use tools such as SciSpace, Humata AI, Elicit, Semantic Scholar, or DeepL for targeted support: translation, concept clarification, paper discovery, question-based extraction, or summary drafting.
4Transfer important findings into an evidence table with fields such as study design, sample size, population, exposure or intervention, comparator, outcomes, effect estimates, limitations, and relevance to your research question.
Watch-outs
Do not rely on AI summaries as evidence. Check the original abstract, methods, results, tables, figures, and supplementary material before citing a claim.
PDF translation can distort technical terms, drug names, statistical language, and eligibility criteria. Verify terminology against the source text.
Tool choice should follow the task: Zotero for reference management, Semantic Scholar or Elicit for discovery, DeepL for translation, and PDF or AI reading tools for close reading support.
Evidence checks
Confirm whether a tool preserves article metadata, DOI, journal details, publication date, and citation information accurately before importing records into your library.
When extracting evidence, compare AI-generated summaries against the paper’s actual PICO elements, endpoints, confidence intervals, adverse events, and stated limitations.
For systematic reviews or guideline work, keep a reproducible record of search sources, screening decisions, inclusion criteria, extraction fields, and any AI-assisted steps.
