Start by defining the research question, target population, intervention or exposure, comparator, outcomes, and study scope. Then use OpenPRISM as a framework for organizing the review rather than as a substitute for expert judgment.
A safer workflow
- 1Break the research topic into reviewable components, such as population, condition, intervention or exposure, comparator, outcomes, study type, and time frame.
- 2Search and screen the literature using transparent inclusion and exclusion criteria, recording why key papers are included or excluded.
- 3Extract relevant claims, methods, results, and limitations from selected studies, keeping each point linked to its source.
- 4Cross-check synthesized findings against the original evidence, noting uncertainty, disagreement between studies, and areas requiring further review.
Watch-outs
- Do not treat a structured summary as a complete systematic review unless the search strategy, screening process, and quality appraisal are fully documented.
- Check whether cited studies are relevant to the population, disease area, intervention, and outcome being discussed.
- Be cautious with conclusions based on abstracts, secondary citations, preprints, small samples, or studies with important methodological limitations.
Evidence checks
- Can each major conclusion be traced back to specific studies or data sources?
- Are study design, sample size, population, outcome definitions, and limitations considered before synthesizing results?
